One of the unique aspects of Family Constellation Therapy is the role of Issue Holders and Representatives during a Family Constellation Workshop. Whether you are attending for the first time or returning to deepen your understanding, knowing these roles can help you feel more comfortable and prepared.
What is an Issue Holder?
An Issue Holder is the person who brings a personal question, challenge or area of life they wish to explore. This may relate to relationships, family dynamics, trauma, health, career, grief or other recurring life patterns.
Working with an experienced Systemic & Family Constellations Facilitator, the Issue Holder briefly shares their intention before the constellation unfolds. Rather than analysing the problem, the process allows hidden family and systemic dynamics to become visible, creating space for new insights and perspectives.
What is a Representative?
A Representative is someone invited to stand in for a family member, relationship, emotion or another significant element within the constellation. No previous experience is required to take on this role.
Representatives often notice sensations, emotions or impulses that contribute to understanding the wider family system. Their role is not to act or perform, but simply to remain present and respond to what naturally emerges during the process under the guidance of the facilitator.
Do I Need to Be an Issue Holder to Benefit?
Not at all. Many people are surprised to discover that acting as a Representative can be a deeply meaningful experience. Even when supporting another person’s constellation, participants often gain valuable insights into their own lives, relationships and family patterns.
Whether you attend as an Issue Holder or a Representative, each Family Constellation Workshop offers an opportunity to witness systemic dynamics, deepen your understanding of Family Constellation Therapy, and experience the power of working within a supportive group.
Illi Adato facilitates Family Constellation Workshops in London, one-to-one Family Constellation Therapy sessions, facilitator training and retreats, welcoming both newcomers and experienced practitioners to explore the transformative potential of Systemic & Family Constellations.
